Most of these positions require a high school diploma and experience working with livestock. Larry Gray of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association says they don't require a college degree. "We use experience in lieu of a degree. I'm a supervisor, so it's a real liability to hire someone without any experience at all."

Still, he encourages those interested in this field to get a degree in agricultural education or criminal justice and get some experience before applying.

In some cases, law enforcement experience is required or desired for this position.

"You have to have three years of livestock experience....You have to read a brand and handle cattle. After that, it's pretty much on-the-job training," says inspector Debbie Deter.
