Additional Information

In the U.S., a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited engineering program is usually required for entry-level engineering jobs. Graduates with a degree in a physical science or in mathematics may qualify for some engineering jobs, especially specialties in high demand.

Most undergraduate engineering programs take four years, but many students find it takes up to five years to complete their studies.

Two years are spent studying math, physics, chemistry, introductory engineering, English, the humanities and social sciences. The last two years focus on engineering specialties.

"Take all the math and science that is offered," says Richard Woods, departmental chair of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Michigan. "Don't neglect writing, including grammar and methods of expression."
