A number of colleges and universities offer courses, certificates and even degrees in purchasing and related fields. A background in materials management and marketing also helps. But there is no one formal education that can lead to a career in toy buying.

Toy buyer Tanyth Gadon says you would have to work as a toy store clerk first to see people, and to see what they buy. "You need actual experience with the product and the people who are buying it," she says.

Ray England owns and buys toys for a specialty toy store. He agrees with Gadon. "Watch children and what they play with in open play situations," he says. "And the second greatest learning tool is putting your own money out there. Then you learn very fast."
