Education Level

Education training and experience are required at different levels for success in different occupations.

Doctoral degree

Prior to admission into an accredited naturopathic medical school, the typical entering student has completed three years of pre-medical training and earned a bachelor of science degree. A licensed naturopathic physician (ND) attends a four-year, accredited, graduate-level naturopathic medical school and is educated in all of the same biomedical sciences as an MD.

Insider Info

Additional Information

If you're interested in becoming a naturopath, you'll need to complete pre-medical studies at a university. Prerequisite courses include biology, biochemistry, chemistry, organic chemistry, introductory psychology and humanities. From there, you can apply to a naturopathic medical school.

The Council on Naturopathic Medical Education accredits programs in the United States and Canada. There are five approved schools in the U.S. and two in Canada.

Naturopathic medical programs take four years of full-time, graduate-level study. Naturopaths are educated in the same basic sciences as medical doctors. That's according to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. However, students of naturopathy also study holistic and non-toxic approaches to therapy with a focus on disease prevention and improving wellness. In addition, naturopaths receive training in clinical nutrition, acupuncture, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, psychology and counseling.

Once training is complete, graduates receive the title ND or doctor of naturopathic medicine. Postdoctoral training is optional.

Graduates from American programs can apply for Canadian licenses to practice in regulated provinces. Graduates from Canadian programs who wish to work in the U.S. must do their homework. Check with the naturopathic licensing agencies in the state in which you plan to practice. Make sure you can apply for a license with a Canadian diploma.

Dr. Diana Christoff Quinn is a naturopathic physician in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She did her undergraduate degree in cultural anthropology. She had to return to college to take pre-medical prerequisites before going to naturopathic medical school. Discovering naturopathic medicine bridged the gap for her between the social and "hard" sciences.

"I found that with sincere motivation toward a goal, and determination to reach that goal, I was able to accomplish a course of study that I never thought I would or could," says Quinn. "My advice to young students would be to follow the goals and dreams that you are passionate about and challenge yourself to achieve them."

Extra Requirements

Licensure and certification are the highest forms of regulation. They are designed to protect the public by ensuring that certain minimum competency requirements are met. They also set standards for the profession. The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians maintains a list of states and territories that license or certify naturopathic doctors.
