Additional Information

While food science professor Robert Bradley says a bachelor's degree in food science or dairy science would be a definite plus, a degree isn't necessary. However, to gain employment with the state, a candidate must pass a competitive examination set by the state and the federal agriculture department.

In Idaho, for example, dairy inspectors must have a good knowledge of dairy production, manufacturing and milking equipment. They also need to know laws that regulate dairy production. As well, inspectors should have experience overseeing dairy processing facilities.
